Poland’s Accessible Beach Program

Every community deserves the opportunity
to create outdoor spaces where everyone
can experience the simple pleasure
of spending time by the water.
For many people, a visit to the beach is simply part of life. A walk along the shoreline, the sound of the waves and time spent with family and friends are experiences many of us rarely stop to appreciate.
For others, those same experiences can remain just out of reach.
Across the world, communities are beginning to look beyond traditional ideas of accessibility and focus instead on creating opportunities for everyone to participate in the places and experiences that bring people together.
That vision recently came to life in Gdansk, Poland.
Community leaders, accessibility advocates, volunteers and local organisations came together to launch a new initiative featuring Wheeleez™ mobility solutions, helping more people enjoy the coastline with greater confidence, comfort and independence.
Proudly manufactured by Asian Prime Sources Limited (APSL), the Wheeleez™ mobility range includes all-terrain beach wheelchairs, all-terrain rollators, and innovative electric and attendant-assisted mobility solutions for both adults and children. Working alongside local partner Scopus, the initiative demonstrates how practical mobility solutions and strong community partnerships can help remove barriers and create greater access to coastal participation.
But the most memorable moments of the day had very little to do with the equipment.
They were about the people.
Where Inclusion Meets the Coastline
As the demonstrations began, the atmosphere quickly became one of curiosity, encouragement and celebration.
Families watched from the shoreline, volunteers offered a helping hand and visitors experienced first-hand how thoughtful mobility solutions could open the beach to more people.
The launch was not simply about introducing new equipment. It was about creating opportunities for people to enjoy the coastline alongside their families, reconnect with nature and experience the freedom that comes from participating in everyday moments many people take for granted.
Throughout the day there was a genuine sense of optimism. Within just two days of the launch, local lifeguard stations had already received numerous enquiries, with at least ten people hiring the Wheeleez® equipment. It was an early indication that improving beach accessibility was meeting a genuine community need. Conversations flowed easily between organisers, participants and visitors, creating an environment where inclusion felt natural rather than planned.
The Moments That Matter Most
The most powerful stories from Gdansk were told by the people experiencing the beach.
One participant, Filip Wysocki, summed up the importance of the initiative in just a few words:
“For most people, going onto the beach is normal. For me, this is the first time.”
It is difficult to imagine a more powerful reminder of why initiatives like this matter.
Another participant, Rafal Ostrowski, spoke about what reaching the shoreline meant to him.
“Before, I could only go as far as the pier. Now I can reach the sea. The wide wheels, safety belt and brakes give me confidence, and the folding handles make it comfortable for my assistant as well.”
These are the moments that define success.
Not product specifications.
Not technical features.
Simply the opportunity for more people to enjoy experiences that many of us rarely stop to think about.
As the day unfolded, smiles, conversations and shared experiences became the true measure of the project’s success.
A Model Other Communities Can Follow
The success of the Gdansk initiative demonstrates what can be achieved when local government, community organisations, volunteers and practical mobility solutions work together with a shared vision.
While every community has different needs, the goal remains the same: creating outdoor spaces where more people can participate, connect and enjoy the simple pleasures of being together.
Every successful accessibility project starts with one community deciding that everyone should have the opportunity to enjoy their coastline. We hope many more communities will follow.
